EDF Energy

THE STORY

EDF Energy are one of the UK’s largest energy providers, providing both generation and retail services for electricity and gas services to domestic and commercial customers.

With around 5 million accounts, EDF provide a substantial amount of the UK’s energy market, and are leading the way in the migration to low carbon energy adoption, both through their nuclear generation programmes and the positioning of Electric Vehicles in the UK market.

THE CHALLENGE

In 2019-20, EDF was undergoing a substantial change to their business to support changes in market regulation.  With government imposed price caps, and general de-regulation, new entrants to the market were providing innovation in technology that EDF were unable to respond to.

As a result, EDF were working with a broad range of technology solution providers to implement new services, driving agility and new products into EDF’s customer base.

THE SOLUTION

Embedded IT were engaged in an interim management position, to review the technology supply chain function and improve engagement between the Supply Chain and IT departments.

With a technology supply chain team of 5 people, and a substantial volume of spend (>£100m) most of which was outsourced to system integrators, Embedded engaged to create a category strategy interlocked with the IT department, supporting cloud services and aligned to major contract refresh dates.

IMPLEMENTATION

With an initial 1 month discovery phase, Embedded worked with the existing team to refresh individual category plans across BPO, Contact Centre, Cloud and Legacy Technology spend. Category plans were rolled out over a year, supported by tactical procurement activities throughout this period, Supplier Relationship Management principles were established for Tier 1 Suppliers, and Tail Management prioritisation was established for smaller suppliers that were unable to be consolidated. The engagement lasted for 10 months, including handover to a permanent Supply Chain manager.

THE OUTCOME

The Technology Supply Chain function are now better engaged with the IT team with aligned objectives, and an integrated plan of activity to support more strategic thinking.
